The wife of one of the Filipino seafarers onboard the cargo ship – Gulf Livestock 1 that sank in waters of Japan is pleading for government’s help. She believes he is still alive and asks them to locate her husband.
Elna Garcia is 41 and mother of three, she is from Naval, Biliran. She said she has faith that her 40-year-old husband, Rex, is alive.
“We are calling President Duterte and Sen. Bong Go to help us. It’s frustrating because it appears that there is no effort to find my husband and his 39 companions,” she said in an interview.

“We really miss him, especially our one-year-old son. Hope we can have him back this Christmas. We keep on praying that he is still alive,” she added.
Her husband was one of the 40 crew members of MV Gulf 1 who was declared missing since the cargo vessel sank along the coast of Japan on September 2. Although three of the crew members were rescued, one died after being found unconscious.
“One of the survivors said the crew were able to (put on) their life jackets before jumping into the water. This gives families hope they might still be alive at sea or on an island,” Hontiveros said.
Gulf Livestock 1, a Panamanian registered cargo vessel that was en route to China from New Zealand with 43 crew members, mostly Filipinos, sank off the coast of Japan amid rough seas caused by Typhoon Maysak.
“I was expecting him to call the following day as he usually does. We waited for his call the entire day only to learn through social media that the vessel has capsized,” Garcia said.
The families of the missing crew not only Filipinos but also from Australia and New Zealand have called for help from authorities.
