Grimaldi Vehicle Carrier Suffers Engine Room Fire Off Italy
Firefighters in Italy responded to an engine room fire on board a Grimaldi roll-on/roll-off ship near Livorno, Italy late Thursday night.
The fire reportedly broke out around 10 p.m. in the engine room of the 1997-built Eurocargo Trieste shortly after the vessel departed from Livorno for Savona, Italy.
No injuries or pollution has been reported.
Video released by Italy’s fire and rescue service, Vigili del Fuoco, shows a tug performing cooling operations on the hull of the vessel.

The incident is at the third fire incident involving a Grimaldi roll-on/roll-off ship this year.
In May, a fire broke out in the cargo area of the Grimaldi Lines vehicle carrier Grande Europa as it was underway off Mallorca in the western Mediterranean. That incident followed a fire and the subsequent sinking of the Grande America in the Bay of Biscay in March 2018.
The two incidents prompted Grimaldi Group to call for tighter controls and regulations related to the transport of dangerous cargo at sea.
