Australia Bans Bulk Carrier for One Year for Underpaying Crew

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has actually outlawed the Hong Kong- flagged mass provider MV Shandong Hai Wang for year after it was uncovered that staff had actually been intentionally underpaid.

AMSA obtained info from the International Transport Workers’ Federation on 6 July 2018 declaring disparities in the settlement of staff earnings. Surveyors boarded the ship on arrival in Gladstone the following day to explore the accusations.

During the assessment, the property surveyors discovered proof that staff had actually been intentionally underpaid by regarding $56,000 (AUD) from the quantity defined in their seafarer employment contract.

The ship was quickly apprehended for breaching the Maritime Labour Convention which lays out seafarers’ legal rights to suitable working problems.

AMSA’s General Manager of Operations, Allan Schwartz, stated AMSA would certainly not endure ships that underpay their staff in Australia.

“The international conventions that protect seafarers’ rights are very clear,” Mr Schwartz stated, including “this is the fourth time in the last year that a ship has been banned from Australian ports for underpaying crew.”

“AMSA takes a zero-tolerance approach to the mistreatment of crew and all ships coming to our shores should be aware of the consequences,” Mr Schwartz stated.

“Ships visiting Australian ports are put on notice. The next ship we find deliberately and repeatedly underpaying its crew and attempting to deceive authorities, can expect an even more severe penalty than that handed to the Shandong Hai Wang.”

The Shandong Hai Wang is run byQilu Ship Management Co Limited.

AMSA claims it obtained verification today that all impressive earnings had actually been obtained by the staff.

As such, the ship has actually been launched from apprehension as well as released with an instructions notification prohibiting its go back to Australian ports for year.
