A response is underway after a Marshall Islands-flagged tanker ran aground Tuesday off the coast of Uruguay close to the resort metropolis of Punta del Este. 

The ship, the MT Siteam Anja, is had simply departed San Lorenzo, Argentina en path to Rio Grande Brazil with greater than 32,000 cubic meters of vegetable oil when it ran aground close to a small island simply off the coast.

According to Uruguay’s Navy, the ship suffered a cooling drawback and was headed to an anchorage south of Punta del Este for inspection. When the ship went to make a flip in direction of the anchorage, the vessel misplaced powered and drifted, ultimately working aground on the island of Lobos.

At least two tugs and dive group have been despatched to help the vessel and to this point no air pollution has been reported.

AIS knowledge from MarineTraffic.com exhibits the ship at anchor on the grounding location, so at this level it’s unclear if the ship has been refloated or not.

As of Wednesday afternoon, lightering operations have been anticipated to start as a way to take away the ship from the world.
