Hanwha Ocean has secured an order value roughly $500 million to assemble 4 very giant ammonia carriers (VLACs) for Greek transport firm Naftomar Shipping and Trading Co. Ltd. Inc (Naftomar).

Each VLAC will be capable to transport 93,000 cubic meters (cbm) of ammonia, a carbon-free gasoline, making them the most important vessel of their class on this planet, Hanwha Ocean. The vessels might be constructed at Hanwha’s Geoje shipyard and delivered to the shipowner beginning in 2026.

The VLACs might be outfitted with Hanwha Ocean’s newest applied sciences, together with its shaft generator motor system (SGM) and Hanwha SmartShip Solution & Service (HS4), the corporate’s proprietary sensible ship platform.

They’ll even be geared up with an ammonia dual-fuel (DF) engine that can enable the shipowner the choice to transform the carriers to make the most of ammonia propulsion sooner or later. To meet present and projected greenhouse fuel emissions rules, these newbuild vessels will even incorporate a extremely eco-friendly design with enhanced effectivity, constructed underneath Naftomar’s stringent specification necessities, Hanwha Ocean stated.

“Ammonia is considered an environmentally friendly fuel that does not emit any carbon dioxide during combustion, making it a promising candidate for decarbonizing the maritime shipping industry. Last year, Hanwha Ocean received approvals in principle (AiPs) for an 86,000-cbm ammonia carrier from France’s Bureau Veritas (BV) in September and the U.K.’s Lloyd’s Register (LR) in October, two recognized global classification societies in the maritime sector,” Hanwha Ocean stated.
