Fifth U.S. Navy Official Pleads Guilty in Singapore Bribery Scandal

(Bloomberg) — A U.S. Navy officer pleaded responsible to bribery over allegations he gave categorized details about the place ships had been scheduled to dock to a Singapore-based contractor in change for money, presents and prostitutes.

Commander Michael Misiewicz, 48, appeared Thursday in federal courtroom in San Diego because the final of 5 Naval officers charged within the case to plead responsible. He admitted to at least one rely of bribery and one rely of conspiracy to commit bribery. He faces a most of 20 years in jail when he’s sentenced, stated Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Pletcher.

The contractor on the heart of the case, Leonard Glenn Francis, chief government officer of Glenn Defense Marine (Asia), pleaded responsible in January 2015, becoming a member of six others who had already admitted wrongdoing, together with a Navy captain, a commander and two different officers, together with two of Francis’s staff.

Mark Adams, a lawyer for Misiewicz, stated after Thursday’s listening to that his shopper has accepted accountability for his actions from the start of the case.

“He is extremely sorry for the harm he has caused to his family, the United States Navy and this great country,” Adams stated in a press release. “The lawyers and the investigator working with Commander Misiewicz find him to be a respectful, conscientious and hard-working gentleman.”

The U.S. Attorney in San Diego stated final week that the federal government’s investigation is constant.

The case is U.S. v. Misiewicz, 15-cr-00033, U.S. District Court, Southern District of California (San Diego).
