Huntington-Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) has damaged floor on a brand new undertaking that can help nuclear submarine building at its Newport News Shipbuilding division.

The Multi-Class Submarine Production Facility is considered one of three new amenities that can allow NNS to additional help the development and supply of Columbia– and Virginia-class submarines.

“The Navy has made it clear how important both the Columbia- and Virginia-class submarine programs are to our nation’s defense,” mentioned Brandi Smith, NNS vice chairman of Columbia-class submarine building. “The Multi-Class Submarine Production Facility is an intentional investment to accelerate our efforts to deliver the highest quality submarines our Navy needs.”

Wednesday’s groundbreaking marked the primary section of building. Work on two further amenities is anticipated to start later this 12 months. The Multi-Class Submarine Production Facility is designed to be adaptable, permitting NNS to help each Columbia- and Virginia-class building.

The Multi-Class Submarine Production Facility is funded collectively by the Navy and HII, and is a part of $1.9 billion in capital investments HII is making at NNS between 2016 and 2025. NNS is considered one of solely two shipyards able to designing and constructing nuclear-powered submarines for the U.S. Navy.

The Navy has recognized the Columbia-class as its high acquisition precedence. Twelve Columbia-class boats will exchange the fleet of Ohio-class nuclear ballistic submarines and take over the function of the nation’s sea-based strategic deterrent; these submarines will present probably the most survivable leg of the nation’s strategic triad.

NNS is a serious contractor and shipbuilding companion within the Columbia-class program, designing, establishing and delivering six module sections per submarine beneath contract to General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Under a separate teaming settlement with Electric Boat, NNS can be constructing Virginia-class submarines for the Navy. The superior capabilities of Virginia-class submarines enhance firepower, maneuverability and stealth.

In November, NNS celebrated the keel authentication for Arkansas (SSN 800), the twenty seventh Virginia-class quick assault submarine, because the shipyard continues to put money into its workforce and amenities to make regular progress on delivering these necessary belongings to the Navy.
