For the trial, Royal Caribbean Group partnered with World Fuel Services to provide the biofuel with the Jankovich Company delivering it to the Navigator of the Seas.

When Navigator of the Seas set sail from the Port of Los Angeles final Friday, Royal Caribbean Group (NYSE: RCL) grew to become the primary main cruise line operator to sail a cruise ship from a U.S. port whereas utilizing renewable diesel gas to fulfill a part of the ship’s gas wants,

This key step within the group’s pursuit of other fuels comes lower than a 12 months after the disclosing of Destination Net Zero, Royal Caribbean Group’s complete decarbonization technique.

“We are committed to investing in technologies and innovations that will help us reduce emissions and fulfill our purpose to deliver great vacations responsibly,” stated Laura Hodges Bethge, Royal Caribbean Group’s govt vp, shared providers operations. “As we celebrate this milestone, we continue to set our sights on other leading alternative solutions to meet our net zero goals.”

The renewable gas being utilized by Navigator of the Seas comprises much less carbon than conventional marine fuels. While this gas is produced from renewable uncooked supplies, the manufacturing course of for this gas makes it molecularly equivalent to conventional marine fuel oil — making a “drop in” gas that may be safely used with the ship’s present engines.

Royal Caribbean plans to proceed utilizing decrease carbon gas to fulfill a part of the Los Angeles-based ship’s gas wants because it evaluates the feasibility for long-term use, with ambitions to develop its use to different ships throughout the fleet. This follows the same trial by the group’s three way partnership companion, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, which is exploring a distinct course of for creating a sustainable biofuel.

For the trial, Royal Caribbean Group partnered with World Fuel Services to provide the renewable gas with the Jankovich Company delivering it on behalf of World Fuel Services to the ship whereas on the Port of Los Angeles.

“We are extremely proud to be a part of Royal Caribbean Group’s journey toward making the cruise industry more sustainable by leveraging our renewable fuel distribution capabilities and technical expertise to facilitate the use of renewable fuel in a marine application,” stated World Fuel Services Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Kasbar.

In addition to testing using biofuel aboard Navigator of the Seas, Royal Caribbean Group is ready to debut the cruise business’s first hybrid-powered ship in summer time 2023, as a part of Silversea Cruises latest class of ships, the Nova class. The group can also be working to cut back emissions whereas at port by investing in shore energy on its ships and collaborating with key cruise ports for its use. For instance, in 2021, Royal Caribbean Group signed an settlement to convey shore energy to PortMiami, which can allow ships to make use of electrical energy at port as a substitute of burning gas.

As we reported earlier, Royal Caribbean can also be introducing a brand new zero-energy cruise terminal within the Port of Galveston, Texas, that builds on its sustainable design efforts and will probably be a LEED-Gold licensed facility.
