ABS to Class Maersk’s ‘New’ Triple-E
International classification society ABS has been chosen to class 11 ultra-large containerships (ULCs) for Denmark’s Maersk Line A/S.
Maersk ordered the 19,630 TEU ships from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of South Korea final month in a deal that features choices to construct as much as six further vessels.
ABS was chosen to class 20 of the Triple-E containerships that Maersk ordered from the identical shipyard 4 years in the past. While the brand new additions can be barely giant than the primary ships, Maersk Line has indicated that the central concerns of the unique Triple-E’s – power effectivity, financial system of scale and the atmosphere – will stay unchanged.
“ABS is pleased that the Maersk Group has expressed its continued confidence by classing these innovative ships with us,” says ABS Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Tony Nassif. “ABS offices worldwide, working in unison, are providing support and analysis for Maersk in the latest standards and international codes, including the energy efficiency standards measured and mandated by the IMO.”
Like the primary era of Triple-E containerships, Maersk hopes this second order will improve its operational efficiencies within the Asia to Europe commerce, enabling the corporate to preserve its market share in keeping with container commerce volumes.
The newbuildings, which would be the largest containerships within the Maersk’s fleet, are due for supply between April 2017 and May 2018.
ABS has offering classication providers to the containership phase fo greater than 50 years, and through the years has classed vessels from these ultra-large vessels to LNG-powered ones.
The eleven ULC’s are a part of a five-year $15 billion funding program introduced by Maersk in September 2014, which incorporates the development of recent ships, retrofitts, containers and different tools.
On Wednesday, Maersk Line introduced that it has ordered 9 14,000 TEU containerships from South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries. Earlier this 12 months, the corporate positioned an order for seven 3,600 TEU feeder vessels on the COSCO Shipyard in Zhoushan China.
