
Baltic Dry Index Climbs to 500 on Firmer Vessel Demand
April 6 (Reuters) – The Baltic Exchange’s most important sea freight index, monitoring charges for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose on Wednesday, boosted by regular charges throughout greater vessels.
The general index, which elements in charges for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize transport vessels, rose 13 factors or 2.67 % to 500 factors.
The capesize index rose 11 factors, or about 2.36 %, to 477 factors.
Average day by day earnings for capesizes, which generally transport 150,000-tonne cargoes similar to iron ore and coal, rose $187 to $4,027.
The panamax index was up 23 factors, or about 4 % at 619 factors.
Average day by day earnings for panamaxes, which normally carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, rose $180 to $4,940.
Among smaller vessels, the supramax index and the handysize index each rose 3 factors to 482 factors and 278 factors respectively. (Reporting by Nithin Prasad in Bengaluru)
