
Baltic Dry Index Slips as Demand Falls Across All Vessels
Oct 5 (Reuters) – The Baltic Exchange’s essential sea freight index, which tracks charges for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell on Monday as demand dropped throughout all vessel classes.
The general index, which components in common day by day earnings of capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize dry bulk transport vessels, dropped eight factors, or 0.9 p.c, to 881 factors.
The capesize index shed 30 factors, or 1.55 p.c, to 1,901 factors.
Average day by day earnings for capesize vessels, which generally transport 150,000-tonne cargoes equivalent to iron ore and coal, fell $223 to $13,511.
The panamax index fell for the ninth straight session, slipping two factors, or 0.29 p.c, to 699 factors.
Average day by day earnings for panamaxes, which often carry 60,000 to 70,000-tonne cargoes of coal or grain, fell $14 to $5,606.
Among smaller vessels, the handysize index dropped two factors to 390 factors and the supramax index fell three factors to 688 factors. (Reporting by Apeksha Nair in Bengaluru; Editing by Pravin Char)
