Baltic Dry Index Soars Past 600 Points
April 15 (Reuters) – The Baltic Exchange’s fundamental sea freight index monitoring charges for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose on Friday, supported totally on improved demand for capesize vessels.
The total index, which elements in charges for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize delivery vessels, went up 38 factors, or 6.37 % to 635 factors.
The capesize index rose 118 factors, or 14.2 %, to 949 factors. The index has climbed about 45 % during the last week.
Average day by day earnings for capesizes, which usually transport 150,000-tonne cargoes equivalent to iron ore and coal, jumped $892 to $7,076.
Continued wholesome volumes within the Atlantic market, primarily resulting from recent iron ore exercise from Brazil, have been supportive of the upper capesize charges, ship brokerage agency Clarksons Platou stated in its be aware on Friday.
The panamax index was up 27 factors, or 3.86 %, at 727 factors.
Average day by day earnings for panamaxes, which normally carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, rose $219 to $5,796 on Thursday.
