The Government of Bermuda’s Marine and Port Services company has chosen Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, to undertake a serious refit of its 700-passenger ferry Bermudian.
Built in 1988, the 118 foot metal vessel accomplished the 635-mile crossing of the North Atlantic to reach on the Somerset, Mass. shipyard, in about 65 hours.
With engineering and undertaking administration by Gladding-Hearn and propulsion knowledge companies and sophistication oversight by Lloyd’s Register, the refit is scheduled for completion in mid-2023.
In addition to hull repairs as required by class and a repainting, the refit will see a number of gadgets eliminated, repaired or changed.
The vessel’s authentic twin Detroit Diesel 12V-71 460 bhp important engines shall be changed with 600 bhp Caterpillar C-18, IMO Tier 2, diesel engines, together with new controls and monitoring programs. With new enlarged shafts, seals, bearings, cooling and exhaust programs, the engines shall be paired with new ZF W650 gear containers to show 5-bladed HS Marine Ni-Br-Al propellers.
The repowered ferry could have a service velocity of 12 knots with a full load of passengers.
Existing air controls at every of the three management stations – one centerline and one at every bridge wing within the wheelhouse – shall be changed with ZF digital controls. The authentic Wagner steering shall be changed with a brand new Kobelt PTO powered hydraulic system.
Two new 99kW Caterpillar turbines, with new mechanical and electrical help programs, will substitute the prevailing 40kW gensets. In the engine room, the prevailing Halon fire-suppression system shall be changed with a brand new “clean agent” hearth suppression system.
The passenger lodging shall be renewed or up to date. The 5 passenger heads shall be refreshed with new fixtures and Headhunter bogs. The black and gray-water holding capability shall be elevated to adjust to zero-discharge necessities.
In the principle cabin, with seating for 150 passengers, the inside bulkheads shall be relined and the carpeting changed. The cabin ceiling shall be changed, and new LED lighting fitted.
