Driving Diversity In Maritime Through Data– IMO-WISTA Women In Maritime Survey

Gender variety in maritime is incredibly fragmented by industry, according to information from the freshly- released 2021 IMO-WISTA (Women’s International Shipping & & Trading Association) Women in Maritime Survey Report.

The record, released on the very first IMO International Day for Women in Maritime, consists of details concerning the percentage as well as circulation of females operating in the maritime industry from IMO Member States as well as the maritime sector. The information shows that females make up just 29% of the total labor force in the basic sector as well as 20% of the labor force of nationwide maritime authorities in Member States.

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim stated, “Benchmarking the current state of the sector is vital to measure where we are, and where we need to go. The Women in Maritime Survey 2021 shines a spotlight on areas in which IMO Member States and the wider maritime industry are performing well – and, more importantly, those where additional attention, resources and encouragement are needed. By actively empowering women with the requisite skills, maintaining a barrier free working environment, we create truly sustainable systems of gender equality.”

Industry information reveals that females seafarers compose simply 2% of the crewing labor force as well as are predominately located in the cruise ship industry, while in shipowning business they comprised 34% of the labor force.

WISTA International President Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou stated, “The knowledge we have gathered about gender diversity in the maritime industry through this first Women in Maritime Survey 2021 is an important step in our ambition to create holistic gender diversity. As a first snapshot, this survey gives telling evidence of how much work still needs to be done. But it also shows us where there are a few bright spots. The maritime industry can see for itself which sectors are pushing ahead with diversity, and which are not.”

Ongoing variety initiatives

The study was carried out in 2021 via on-line analyses sent out to IMO Member States as well as business. The study is just one of the tasks under the 2020 IMO-WISTA Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on advertising higher variety as well as incorporation via improved collaboration tasks in the maritime industry. The MoU intends to establish a structure for both IMO as well as WISTA to advertise sex variety as well as incorporation as crucial consider giving a lasting future for the delivery sector worldwide.

IMO as well as WISTA plan to create future Women in Maritime study reports to gauge progression as well as act as support for the suitable allowance of sources as well as capability structure by numerous stakeholders. Other campaigns under the IMO-WISTA MoU consist of establishing a data source of women specialists in a large range of marine topics that are offered for talking interactions. This will certainly add in the direction of even more varied panels at maritime meetings as well as meetings past the industry.
