Eastern Shipbuilding Group Inc’s Allanton shipyard in Panama City, Fla., recently released the Sandy Ground (Hull 220), the secondly of 3 brand-new “Ollis Class” ferryboats for the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division.
The Ollis Class ferryboats collection is called afterArmy Staff Sgt Michael H. Ollis, a Staten Island indigenous eliminated in Afghanistan on August 28, 2013, when he entered the course of a Polish policeman, obstructing him from the self-destruction vest of an insurgent.
The 3 Ollis Class double-ended 4,500-passenger ferryboats, are developed to a style given by Elliott Bay Design Group.
Main propulsion power is given by 2 sets of Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) 12-710 @ 900 rpm EPA Tier 4 aquatic propulsion engines with each set driving a RV6 ECS/285 -2 Voith Schneider Propeller through a Reintjes DUP 3000 P integrating equipment.
Electrical power generation is given by 3 EPA Tier 3 aquatic constant task diesel generator collections, each consisting of a Caterpillar C18 drivinga 480 V, 60 Hz, 3-phase generator ranked at 425 kW at 0.8 PF @ 1,800 rpm.
