
Firmer Demand Pushes Baltic Dry Index Up
March 29 (Reuters) – The Baltic Exchange’s principal sea freight index, monitoring charges for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose on Tuesday, helped by stronger charges throughout all vessel segments.
The total index that components within the charges for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize transport vessels, was up three factors to 409 factors.
The capesize index rose 4 factors or 1.97 % to 207 factors.
Average each day earnings for capesizes, which usually transport 150,000-tonne cargoes comparable to iron ore and coal, had been up $17 to $2,099.
The panamax index was up 5 factors at 471 factors.
Average each day earnings for panamaxes, which normally carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, rose $41 to $3,772.
Among smaller vessels, the supramax index rose one level to 474 factors, whereas the handysize index was up two factors to 270 factors. (Reporting by Nithin Prasad in Bengaluru)
