Fishermen Held Over Killing of Captain, Engineer Off South Korea
SEOUL, June 20 (Reuters) – Two Vietnamese crewmen on a South Korean fishing vessel within the Indian Ocean have allegedly stabbed and killed the ship’s captain and the engineer over a dispute, South Korea’s coast guard stated Monday.
The two, each aged 32, have since been overpowered by different crew members and are locked up aboard the vessel because it sails to the Seychelles capital Victoria, a coast guard official in South Korea’s southern metropolis of Busan stated.
The assault in opposition to the captain and the engineer happened early morning South Korean time Monday and was reported to the coast guard by the vessel’s proprietor positioned in Busan, coast guard official Kim In-ho stated by phone.
The Vietnamese crew members had been believed to be drunk on the time of the incident, Kim stated. “They are said to have been unhappy with the orders given by Korean bosses,” he stated, including their precise motive must be investigated.
South Korean maritime police will dispatch a workforce of investigators to the island state on Tuesday, and the suspects will probably be introduced again to South Korea, Kim stated. (Reporting by Jeong-eun Lee; Editing by Jack Kim and Michael Perry)
