German Cargo Ship Freed After Running Aground Near Montreal
A German-flagged heavy-lift cargo ship is now free after working aground Thursday on Lake Saint-Louis, Quebec close to Montreal.
The 12,700 DWT MV BBC Maple Lea ran aground Thursday morning at about 8 a.m. native time on the Saint Lawrence Seaway within the neighborhood of St. Nicholas Island in Châteauguay.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) says it has deployed a group of investigators to find out the circumstances of the grounding.
AIS information from MarineTraffic.com confirmed that the vessel was freed with assist of tugs at 12:30 p.m. native time on Friday.
A press release launched Thursday from the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake stated it appeared that ship’s entrance bow thruster hydraulic system was broken within the grounding and the ship was leaking “droplets” hydraulic oil, though the state of affairs posed little to no danger.
The vessel is claimed to be carrying a cargo of scrap metallic.
The BBC Maple Lea was inbuilt 2007. It is owned by Auerbach Schifffahrt and chartered by BBC Chartering.
