autonomous ferry deal is finalized

Roger Trinterud, gross sales director, Kongsberg Maritime (left) and Marco Hoogendoorn, director, Holland Shipyards Group, finalized the settlement that can deliver superior Kongsberg know-how to the following technology of Swedish highway ferries.

The autonomous electrical highway ferries that Holland Shipyard is to ship to the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket Sweden) will function Kongsberg Maritime know-how.

Sweden orders 4 autonomous hybrid-electric ferries

Under a contract with Holland Shipyards, Kongsberg Maritime will present the ferries’ electrical programs, in addition to a complete management system suite, together with power administration, navigation, and an all-new situational consciousness system linked with automated maneuvering.

The autonomous electrical ferries can have IMO level 2 autonomy, which means that they’re remotely operated and monitored, however do have crew on board that may take management every time needed.

Along with the overall automation of all onboard programs and important port gear, together with charging and mooring, Kongsberg Maritime can even ship the know-how for the distant monitoring and operation heart in Stockholm from which the ferries will likely be managed, together with safe communication between ferries, terminals, and the management heart. A simulator with 360-degree visuals from Kongsberg Digital can also be a part of the supply, enabling the ferry firm to coach its crews in new operational procedures.

“We will deliver the ferries turn-key to Sweden, including shore charging and auto-mooring. These vessels mark a new step forward for Holland Shipyards Group and the ferry market in general,” says Marco Hoogendoorn, director, Holland Shipyards Group. “Not many yards have experience with delivery of a complete electrical sailing scope, including shore infrastructure. An innovative contract like this one really is recognition of our past performances.”

“This development confirms our view that coastal traffic – and ferries in particular – will be the first ship types to adopt autonomous operations,” stated Roger Trinterud, gross sales director, Kongsberg Maritime.

“This project will also further build on the work we have done on Yara Birkeland, a zero-emissions container-feeder vessel, and the fully autonomous freight ferries for Norwegian grocery distributor Asko,” added Hans Westad, portfolio supervisor, autonomous and distant initiatives, Kongsberg Maritime.

The challenges in automating the operations of those ferries embrace the quick routes on which they may operaste and the presence of serious on-water visitors, together with pleasure boats, and occasional ice. The upside, in line with Erik Froste, CEO of Swedish Road Ferries, is that the state-of-the-art ferries are good for the atmosphere and improve security.

A 12-month take a look at interval is deliberate after supply of the ferries to additional develop and fine-tune automated functionalities, and to display their capabilities to Swedish authorities.
