YouTube video clip recorded crane collapse

Crane producer Liebherr states the collapse of a substantial overseas crane throughout screening May 2, was the failing of a crane hook made as well as made by an exterior distributor. As we reported previously, video clip of the collapse went viral on YouTube.

The 90 meter high crane with a 160 meter long boom is being mounted aboard the overseas setup vessel Orion 1 incomplete for DEME by Chinese shipbuilder COSCO (Qidong) Offshore Co., which is, at this phase of building and construction, still the proprietor of the vessel.

The vessel reached Liebherr’s Rostock, Germany, center on November 22, 2019, for setting up as well as setup of the large 90 meter high Liebherr Tender Loving Care crane.

Liebherr provided the complying with declaration on the case:

Accident During Overload Test

During an overload examination of the overseas crane HLC 295000 from Liebherr- MCCtec Rostock GmbH a major mishap took place leading to 2 hurt individuals needing to be required to health center for therapy. A more 10 individuals were dealt with by paramedics on website.

“At this point we wish the injured persons all the best and hope for a full and speedy recovery,” claimed Leopold Berthold, Managing Director of Liebherr- MCCtec Rostock GmbH. “Considering the extent of the damages, we are above all thankful that it did not cause more personal injuries. Our priorities currently lie in fully supporting the investigating authorities in order to contribute to the quickest possible clarification of the accident,” included Berthold.

At this phase in the examinations, the liable authorities as well as professionals all concur that a damaged crane hook was the root cause of the mishap. The precise factors regarding why the hook did not stand up to the tons are uncertain at this phase of examinations. The style as well as manufacture of the crane hook was bought from an exterior distributor. A layout or manufacturing mistake of the Liebherr crane can for that reason be left out.

The overload examination for the HLC 295000 was prepared for a lots situation of 5,500 tonnes. The lift must have been executed with the hoisting of a barge. Carrying out an overload examination is a common treatment for the market, wherein the crane is evaluated for its optimum training ability. Currently well-known realities show that the case took place at a lots of around 2,600 tonnes triggering a domino effect which caused the mishap.

As points stand, the mishap has no impact on everyday procedures at Liebherr- MCCtec Rostock GmbH. According to first price quotes, the damages total up to a high double-digit million number.
