Hazel Crest, Ill., based mostly rubber drained gantry (RTG) crane producer Mi-Jack has chosen US Hybrid to transform an RTG crane from diesel to hydrogen powered.

“The new reality for intermodal terminals is achieving carbon neutrality. Offering hydrogen-powered RTG cranes is paramount for ensuring terminals meet their carbon neutrality goals without compromising on performance,” says Aaron Newton, VP of Sales at Mi-Jack. “We look forward to collaborating with US Hybrid on bringing innovative hydrogen-powered solutions to the intermodal market.”

Under the phrases of the settlement, US Hybrid, a subsidiary of Ideanomics (NASDAQ: IDEX), a serious participant in port electrification, is managing all procurement, engineering and design work referring to the hydrogen propulsion equipment. The firm will supply a hydrogen gasoline cell system from Hyundai Motor Corp, and can regionally manufacture core parts together with the hydrogen storage tanks and cooling techniques.

All manufacturing, meeting and system testing will happen at US Hybrid’s engineering facility in Torrance, California. Mi-Jack will set up the hydrogen propulsion equipment into the RTG crane at its Illinois facility, with US Hybrid offering all mandatory engineering diagrams and on-site help.

RTG cranes are seen as one of many hardest to decarbonize items of apparatus in ports and railyards. They function 10-20 hours per day, constantly lifting transport containers that may weigh almost 80,000 kilos when absolutely loaded.

This job requires lots of energy, and most RTG cranes nonetheless depend on fossil fuels to satisfy this want. On common, a RTG crane burns 10 US gallons of diesel gasoline per hour. One gallon of diesel emits 22 kilos of CO2 into the environment.

The benefits of hydrogen as a greener choice for RTG cranes embody that hydrogen gasoline cells could be refilled quick, are confirmed to function effectively in excessive cold and warm climate, and ship the identical or extra energy as diesel. Powered by hydrogen, RTG cranes can preserve working reliably with zero emissions.

US Hybrid has a observe file in decarbonizing port gear and equipment in addition to different specialty autos. The firm has strategic partnerships with International OEMs to transform new and present ICE powered port gear to zero emission, and is working to develop zero emission buses and vehicles.

Ideanomics says it’s dedicated to supporting the expansion of US Hybrid. I“For our exceptional engineers at US Hybrid, this is a dream project. They get to come up with a zero-emission way to power a very big and energy intensive piece of machinery,” says Macy Neshati, Chief Commercial Officer at Ideanomics. “I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to Mi-Jack for taking action to decarbonize gantry cranes and trusting US Hybrid as their partner to do it.”
