OOCL Joins 20,000 TEU Club With Six-Ship Order from Samsung

Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL) revealed Wednesday that it has entered into shipbuilding contracts with Samsung Heavy Industries for the development of six 20,000 TEU containerships, making it the newest in a rising checklist of carriers who go for ships at or above the 20,000 mark.

OOIL is father or mother firm to Orient Overseas Container Carriers (OOCL), one of many world’s main container transport and logistics firms. The order was place by means of six oblique wholly-owned subsidiaries of OOIL.

The six ships have been ordered for whole price ticket of USD $951.6 million, or about $158.6 million per vessel, OOIL mentioned in assertion. The firm says it expects to obtain financing for as much as 70% of the entire buy value, and that the remaining 30% might be paid for with inside assets.

The vessels are anticipated to be delivered in 2017.

The order follows OOCL’s G6 Alliance companion MOL’s order for 4 20,150 TEU ships from Samsung introduced in early March. MOL additionally introduced the long-term constitution of two further 20,150 TEU capability containerships with Shoei Kisen Kaisha to be constructed at Imabari Shipbuilding Co. The six vessels might be launched and delivered in 2017, and can serve the Asia-Europe service.

Earlier this week, France’s CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipper and a part of the “Ocean Three” UASC and CSCL, introduced plans to order three 20,600 TEU ships from South Korea’s Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. The three ships are anticipated to be delivered within the third quarter of 2017.

Earlier this 12 months, Imabari Shipbuilding revealed that can be constructing 11 further vessels of 20,000 TEU for an unidentified European proprietor that’s believed to be Evergreen Group. Delivery of these vessels is predicted to start in 2018.
