Twelve crew members were rescued from a sinking a cargo vessel ‘MSV Krishna Sudama’ by the Indian Coast Guard, in the Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast, officials said on Sunday.

The Coast Guard received information on Saturday around 9 pm that a vessel named MSV Krishna Sudama had flooding on board, around 10 nautical miles off the Okha coast.

The Coast Guard said in a statement, that the vessel started sailing from Mundra in Gujarat for Djibouti on Saturday, carrying 905-tonne rice and sugar to the African nation.

They said, “Search and rescue was immediately commenced wherein Coast Guard Ship C-411 sailed from Okha, C-161 was diverted from off Mundra, and MV Southern Robin in the vicinity of the area was diverted to render assistance.”

The Coast Guard ship C-411 arrived and undertook extensive search in the area and located the craft which was carrying the 12 crew members who had abandoned the sinking vessel. Even though the weather conditions were unfavourable and there were dangerous debris floating, the Coast Guard ship rescued all the 12 crew members successfully.

“They were brought to Okha and are safe,” the statement said. They added that the accident’s area is being monitored by the Coast Guard ship C-161, so that it can combat any probable oil pollution incident that might result from leakage of fuel from the cargo vessel.
