Ship Photos of the Day – First ‘Megaship’ Sails Into San Francisco Bay
The greatest containership to ever go to North America sailed into San Francisco Bay final week for its inaugural go to to the Port of Oakland.
The CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, with capability to hold 18,000 twenty-foot containers, docked on the port’s Outer Harbor on the morning of December 31, 2015 after calling on the Port of Los Angeles earlier within the week.
The arrival of the vessel symbolically opens the Trans-Pacific commerce route between Asia and North America to so-called megaships, though many query whether or not the U.S. is able to often obtain vessels of this dimension.
The Benjamin Franklin is owned by France’s CMA CGM Group, who says the ship will function on its Pearl River Express, a daily service connecting a few of China’s predominant ports, together with Xiamen, Nansha and Yantian, with Los Angeles and Oakland.
