
Ship Photos of the Day – Russia’s Newest Icebreaker, MV Murmansk
Arctech Helsinki Shipyard marked Christmas Day with the supply of the Baltic Sea icebreaker Murmansk at Vyborg Shipyard in Russia.
Murmansk is the second in a collection of three diesel-electric icebreakers ordered by Rosmorport and the Russian Ministry of Transport in 2012. The fundamental design of the vessel and buying of main parts was offered by Vyborg Shipyard, whereas Arctech Helsinki was answerable for the development, outfitting and testing of the vessel.
The important duties of the Murmansk can be icebreaking and aiding of heavy-tonnage vessels in ice situations, towing of vessels and different floating constructions year-round in ice and open water, hearth preventing, salvage, and cargo transport, primarily within the Baltic Sea and in some circumstances the Arctic area.
The vessel is ready to function in temperatures as chilly as -40°C and the utmost icebreaking functionality is 1.5 meter thick. The icebreaker will measure 119.8 m in size and 27.5 m in breadth.
