Six Incidents Of Armed Robbery Against Ships Reported, Including Two From Singapore Strait (August 2020)

ReCAAP Information Sharing Center launched the August 2020 Report on the scenario of piracy and also heist versus ships in Asia.

Overall Situation

  • In August 2020, 6 occurrences of heist versus ships were reported in Asia
  • No piracy occurrence was reported
  • There was no record of kidnapping of staff in the Sulu-Celebes Seas and also waters off Eastern Sabah, Malaysia in August 2020

  • However, the kidnapping of staff for ransom money continues to be a significant problem as shown by the Warning provided by ReCAAP ISC on 2 July 20 that 5 Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) participants were intending to carry out kidnapping of staff from ships going by the TawiTawi and also Sabah waters
  • ReCAAP ISC is worried concerning the proceeded event of occurrences aboard ships while underway in the Singapore Strait
    • Two occurrences were reported in the Singapore Strait in August 2020
    • With these, an overall of 21 occurrences were reported in the Singapore Strait throughout January-August 2020 consisting of 17 occurrences happened in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS), 2 occurrences in the preventive location, one occurrence in the westbound lane of the TSS and also one occurrence simply outdoors (south) of the TSS
