Sunken Towboat Restricting Traffic on Mississippi River Near Memphis
A bit of the Mississippi River is restricted to one-way vessel visitors close to Memphis because the Coast Guard and response crews work to salvage a towboat which sank earlier this week after colliding with one other vessel.
According to the Coast Guard, the 2 towing vessels William Straight and Margaret Ann collided on Monday at mile marker 727 on the Lower Mississippi River, inflicting the William Straight to sink in about 20 toes of water.
The Coast Guard stated response crews had deployed 1,100 toes of containment increase and 600 toes of sorbent increase across the vessel to forestall any additional spreading of air pollution, whereas an overflight Tuesday was to evaluate the environmental influence of the incident.
The newest replace stated the Mississippi River remained restricted to one-way vessel visitors round a security zone from mile marker 726 to 728 as cleanup and salvage operations proceed on the scene.
It is unclear if the vessels have been pushing any barges on the time of the accident.
The Coast Guard says it’s investigating the reason for the incident.
