United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has hailed its new ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) ‘Barzan’ because the world’s greenest containership.

The MV Barzan was constructed at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), Mokpo South Korea and is the lead ship in a brand new collection of six LNG-ready, 18,800 TEU vessels which are stated to set new requirements for gasoline and power effectivity.

According to UASC, preliminary calculations point out an EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) worth that’s near 50% under the 2025 restrict set by IMO. On a CO2 output per TEU foundation, the MV Barzan is greater than 60% under a 13,500 TEU vessels delivered simply three years in the past, UASC says.

“We understand that providing environmentally friendly transport solutions and recognizing environmental initiatives around the globe are no longer a choice; they are a necessity for both our organization and our customers”, stated Jørn Hinge, President and Chief Executive Officer of UASC. “M.V. ‘Barzan’ and the 18,800 TEU fleet will complement the 15,000 TEU fleet, being gradually delivered since November 2014 and operating on the Asia-Europe trades as part of the Ocean 3 services. There, Barzan will deliver the industry’s lowest per-container levels of CO2 output.”

UASC’s orderbook consists of eleven 15,000 TEU and 6 of the 18,800 TEU vessels all scheduled to be totally delivered by 2016. In 2015, UASC will obtain a complete of 10 new vessels.

In addition to power saving applied sciences beforehand used, MV Barzan additionally consists of ship-to-shore energy provide resolution for zero emissions at berth; an power environment friendly built-in system to observe and optimize propulsion methods, equipment operations and navigation; and a Waste Heat Recovery System that converts thermal power from the exhaust fuel from the primary engines into electrical energy.
