Norwegian shipbuilder Ulstein Verft and Nexans Marine Operations have marked the beginning of development of a brand new DP3 cable-laying vessel (CLV) Nexans Aurora in a metal slicing ceremony held on January 19, 2024.

Four months after signing the shipbuilding contract, Nexans Marine Operations and Ulstein Verft formally began he development of Nexans’ subsequent cable laying vessel.

Attending the metal slicing ceremony on the Crist hull yard had been representatives from Nexans, Ulstein Verft, DNV and Crist.

Knut Flage, technical supervisor in Nexans’ shipbuilding mission, had the dignity of beginning the metal slicing machine.

Ulstein Verft is answerable for the vessel’s development and the preparation of her topside tools.

The newbuild is an up to date model of Nexans’ flagship, the Nexans Aurora, which was delivered in 2021.

The cutting-edge CLV has a size of 149.9 meters and a beam of 31 meters.

The vessel, in a position to accommodate the crew of 90, is provided with three turntables – a break up turntable on deck with a capability for as much as 10,000t of cable, an under-deck turntable with a 3,500t cable capability, and a basket under deck for fibre optic cables holding 450t.
