US: Russia Used False Signals in Mediterranean Sea Incident

ReutersBy Andrea Shalal

BERLIN, June 30 (Reuters) – The United States on Wednesday accused Russia of intentionally displaying the improper naval indicators and interfering with a U.S. plane service within the Mediterranean Sea, within the newest salvo a few June incident that each nations blame on one another.

Captain Danny Hernandez, spokesman for U.S. European Command, stated the Russian warship Neustrashimy (FF 777) performed unsafe and unprofessional maritime maneuvers, which might have led to miscalculation, damage and even loss of life.

A lot of Cold War-style incidents have occurred at sea and within the air in current months, with the militaries of Russia and the United States accusing one another of harmful actions in worldwide waters and airspace.

“This most recent incident comes on the heels of other unsafe air and naval incidents on the part of the Russian military,” Hernandez stated in an announcement to Reuters.

He stated such motion had the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between the nations.

In April, the U.S. navy stated Russian SU-24 bombers simulated assault passes close to the USS Donald Cook within the Baltic Sea.

Russia and the United States blame one another for unsafe maneuvers within the June 17 incident which occurred lower than two weeks after officers from the 2 nations met in Moscow to debate methods to keep away from incidents at sea.

The Russian Defence Ministry stated a U.S. destroyer approached dangerously near a Russian ship, in what it stated was a flagrant U.S. violation of guidelines to keep away from at-sea collisions.

A U.S. official countered that the Russian ship carried out “unsafe and unprofessional” operations close to two U.S. ships.

On Wednesday, Hernandez stated the Russian ship raised the “ball-diamond-ball” sign on its mast when it was two nautical miles away from the USS Gravely, a U.S. destroyer working within the Mediterranean with the USS Harry S. Truman plane service.

That mixture of easy geometric shapes is used to point {that a} ship’s capacity to maneuver is restricted.

Russia recognized its ship because the Russian Navy frigate Yaroslav Mudry.

Hernandez stated the Russian ship maneuvered to get nearer to the Gravely, altering course and velocity because the U.S. ship did, which he stated confirmed it was not the truth is restricted in its capacity to maneuver, and was thus deliberately displaying a false worldwide sign.

As a consequence, he stated, the U.S. destroyer believed the Russian ship was deliberately making an attempt to intrude with Harry S. Truman operations. (Reporting by Andrea Shalal; Editing by Andrew Hay)
