Wärtsilä Ship Design Launches New LNG Carrier Series

Wärtsilä, the Finnish engine manufactuer and ship design specialist has unveiled in the present day a brand new sequence of LNG service ship designs to go with its portfolio of LNG gas options.

The sequence includes 4 vessel designs, the WSD59 3K, WSD59 6.5K, WSD55 12K, and WSD50 20K, all developed in shut cooperation with prospects as a way to produce vessels which can be applicable for the worldwide LNG infrastructure and relevant for each ocean going and inland water operations.

“Wärtsilä Ship Design has an extensive reference list dating back to 2003 for vessel designs for LNG fueled ships. The experience and know-how that has been built up during these 15 years has been utilised to develop this latest series of world class designs for LNG Carriers. The entire concept of these designs is to enable the lowest possible fuel consumption, to allow owners to select the ship design that exactly meets their needs, and to provide shipyards with the most convenient and cost effective packages possible,” says Riku-Pekka Hägg, Vice President, Ship Design, Wärtsilä Ship Power.

According to Wärtsilä, the WSD59 3K design gives gas consumption of seven.5 t/d at a service pace of 14 knots and a design draft is 4.75 meters. The gas consumption for the WSD55 12K design vessels is 13.5 t/d at a service pace of 14.5 knots, making it the very best in its class. The design draft is 6.2 meters. The gas consumption for vessels based mostly on the WSD50 20K design can also be the very best in its class at 18.1 t/d at a service pace of 15 knots, whereas the WSD59 6.5K design gives a gas consumption of 11.0 t/d at a pace of 13 knots. The design draft is 5.8 meters.

More than 4000 vessels have far been constructed based mostly on Wärtsilä designs, together with a number of the world’s most superior LNG powered ships. According to Mr Hägg; “Our ship designs consistently raise the bar for merchant shipping in terms of efficiency and environmental sustainability.”

The new designs have been developed on the Wärtsilä Ship Design workplaces in China and Poland. Wärtsilä says the sequence of designs is a crucial a part of the corporate’s strategic “Taking Merchant Shipping into the Gas Age” program.
