Wilhelmsen further expands 3D printing horizons with Singapore start-up F-drones

Wilhelmsen’s Marine Products department has actually authorized an MOU with Singapore- based drone distribution carrier F-drones, for last-mile distribution of its 3D published extra components.

As the only drone distribution carrier presently accredited by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) to perform drone shipments Beyond-Visual-Line- of-Sight (BVLOS) to vessels at anchorage, the arrangement with F-drones makes it possible for Wilhelmsen to expand the extent of its unique on-demand additive production solution.

Hakon Ellekjaer, Head of Venture, 3D Printing, Wilhelmsen states, “Exploring safe, reliable and inexpensive alternatives for last mile delivery of our 3D printed parts to our customers is key for us moving forward. F-Drones is actively developing a solution and their ambitions are very much aligned with our own, to disrupt the existing supply chain and offer a service that is faster, cheaper and greener”.

Currently improving the following version of its very own exclusive drone system, efficient in lugging 5kg over a range of 50km, F-drones’ lasting passion is to establish a bigger range drone efficient in supplying 100kg to vessels approximately 100km away.

Commenting on the arrangement, Yeshwanth Reddy, Co- owner of F-drones, states, “We are excited to be working together with Wilhelmsen’s 3D printing venture, which is at the forefront of commercializing on-demand manufacturing for the maritime industry. Its capability can provide a large variety of parts in different shapes, sizes, and materials. With our drones that can carry much bigger items over longer distances, we can catalyze the adoption of on-demand printing of parts for the maritime industry”.

As component of an unique Early Adopter Program for 3D published aquatic extra components, 6 clients joined Wilhelmsen’s Marine Products department in December 2019 to start using on-demand additive production. Existing clients consist of Berge Bulk, Carnival Maritime, Thome Ship Management, OSM Maritime Group, Executive Ship Management and also Wilhelmsen Ship Management.
