CTV Hydrocat 48 is first vessel powered by MAN hydrogen twin gasoline V12 engines

Windcat Workboats and CMB Tech, each a part of the CMB, have introduced plan to order an extra six hydrogen-fueled crew switch vessels (CTVs) by 2024. This follows the supply of the Hydrocat 48, the world’s first hydrogen fueled CTV, again in June and trials with launching buyer Vestas.

The Hydrocat 48 will not be powered by a hydrogen gasoline cell however by two twelve-cylinder MAN D2862 LE448, diesel engines, every with an output of 749 kW (1,019 hp) at 2,100 rpm.

The six further hydrogen-powered vessels embody 4 vessels of the identical 25 meter lengthy MK3.5H2 sequence because the Hydrocat 48, two of which can be delivered in 2022 and two in 2023. The subsequent vessel which can be delivered on this sequence is meant for the German offshore wind market and can be operated by joint-venture accomplice FRS Windcat. The different two vessels can be of the brand new MK5 sequence, 27-meter vessels with double the hydrogen capability of the MK3.5H2 sequence.

CMB Tech and Windcat Workboats are working collectively to additional optimize engine capacities with the intention of accelerating the proportion of hydrogen used of their twin gasoline design. The long-term plan is to develop the know-how and infrastructure to finally allow a mono-fuel choice by the interior combustion engine (ICE).

CMB Tech notes that the hydrogen provide chain remains to be in its infancy and might want to develop to a stage the place it’s available in additional areas. The introduction of extra hydrogen-powered vessels will improve the demand for hydrogen, which is able to facilitate the event of hydrogen infrastructure.

CMB Tech and Windcat have already developed options for delivering hydrogen to vessels. They embody a 40 foot, 500 bar trailer able to transporting hydrogen for distant refueling of all totally different purposes at the moment in use. This permits hydrogen bunkering in varied port areas which are a distance from the hydrogen supply. Multiple purposes and clients will be served by this one system, which means the Hydrocat fleet has entry to hydrogen bunkering.
