Preparations for Costa Concordia refloating start

APRIL 26, 2014—The first of the 19 sponsons that shall be put in on the Costa Concordia in preparation for the refloating of the submerged cruise ship arrived this morning in Giglio Island, Italy.

The 810-ton, 33.5-meter huge, 11.5-meter excessive sponson shall be certainly one of 14 new sponsons positioned on the
 starboard aspect. Another 4 shall be put in on the ship’s port aspect. The sponson has electrical-pneumatic methods and strand jacks that attain a top of greater than 20 meters and depth of 10.5 meters. The plan was chosen by specialist representatives from Costa Crociere, Carnival Corporation & plc, London Offshore Consultants and Standard P&I Club, with the collaboration of RINA and Fincantieri.

At this level the hull is resting on the false backside at a depth of about 30 m. A pneumatic system shall be used to empty the water step by step from the caissons on each side of the wreck, giving the enough buoyancy to push it upwards. On completion of the emptying course of, a piece of about 18 m will stay submerged. 

Earlier within the week, the Conquest MB1, a brand new refined crane barge, arrived at Giglio Island to start operations associated to the putting in the 19 sponsons. The Conquest MB1 is fitted with a complicated rotating/luffing crane and related automated heel/trim compensation system.

The barge is designed with a six level mooring system and lodging modules for 60 individuals, in addition to methods to help diving operations. Divers will function from the barge throughout the set up of the sponsons.

Sponsons shall be put in and related underwater with chains and cables, with a fancy and climate delicate operation.
