Marine propulsion specialist Schottel will equip 4 Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) being constructed by the Norwegian VARD Group with full propulsion packages.

The bundle per vessel consists of two SCHOTTEL Dynamic RudderPropellers sort SRP 460 D, one SCHOTTEL Retractable RudderPropeller sort SRP 380 R, and two SCHOTTEL TransverseThrusters sort STT 5.

The vessels are being constructed for Norwegian offshore wind vessel proprietor Edda Wind.

“Being part of the Edda Wind fleet fills us with great pride,” says SCHOTTEL CEO Stefan Kaul. “It also validates our strategy of developing products with a close eye on both our customers and their customers’ needs and requirements.”

He continues: “This strategy is reflected in the complete SCHOTTEL propulsion concept we are able to supply for this project. With its individual components, the package is specifically tailored to the needs of a CSOV, where precise maneuverability and crew comfort are essential, and the performance of the propulsion system is crucial for the time window in which to operate. We are confident that the solution we offer is perfectly suited to this application.”Schottel to Provide Full Propulsion Packages for Edda Wind's New CSOVsCredit: Schottel

Each of the 2 SRP-Ds to be delivered has an enter energy of two,000 kW and a propeller diameter of two,600 mm. The SRP-D represents the dynamic fast-response propulsion resolution for extremely demanding offshore purposes. It is the newest evolution of one of many world’s most subtle azimuth thrusters.

According to Schottel, the SRP-D’s propeller shaft with an eight-degree tilt reduces the interplay between the propulsion items in addition to between the unit and hull, leading to elevated propulsion effectivity.

In addition to this, Scottel mentioned, the thruster options quite a few enhancements, together with diminished propeller acceleration/deceleration occasions and a high-speed azimuth steering system with bolstered gear parts, which achieves double the rotational velocity. The influence on DP efficiency with the SRP-D dynamic properties was confirmed inside a time area stage three evaluation commissioned by classification society DNV, Schottel added.Schottel to Provide Full Propulsion Packages for Edda Wind's New CSOVsCredit: Schottel

Further, the SRP 380 R with an enter energy of 1,500 kW contains a propeller diameter of two,200 mm. It facilitates most maneuverability, excessive propulsion energy, and exact dynamic positioning, Schottel mentioned.

Similar to the SRP-D, the retractable thruster for the Edda Wind CSOV collection is provided with a propeller shaft with an eight-degree tilt. When retracted, the SRP-R features as a 360-degree steerable propulsion unit, Schottel added.

The two Schottel TransverseThrusters (STT) 5s (1,400 kW, 2,500 mm propeller diameter) with elastically mounted nicely set up and an optimized propeller design assure better consolation and diminished noise and vibration emissions with a view to fulfil the ship’s consolation class notation. The STT’s significantly low-vibration design helps the Edda Wind vessel collection to excel in most consolation whereas sustaining excessive DP functionality.Schottel to Provide Full Propulsion Packages for Edda Wind's New CSOVsCredit: Schottel

The CSOVs function VARD’s new hull kind for optimized seakeeping talents and low gasoline consumption.

Two of the CSOVs are scheduled for supply in Q1 2025. The hulls might be constructed by VARD in Romania, whereas the ultimate outfitting, commissioning, and supply might be accomplished at one in every of VARD’s shipyards in Norway.

The two different vessels, scheduled for supply in Q2 2025 and Q1 2026, might be constructed and delivered by VARD Vung Tau in Vietnam. In addition to the 4 vessels, the settlement has choices for two+2 extra vessels.

The new-builds within the VARD 4 25 design might be utilized by wind turbine technicians performing commissioning and upkeep work on offshore wind generators. Each CSOV could have 101 cabins to accommodate as much as 120 individuals.

All newly constructed vessels are ready for zero-emission operation using a liquid natural hydrogen provider and/or methanol direct injection as an power supply.
