An Italian navy ship shot down a drone flying in the direction of it within the Red Sea on Saturday, the defence ministry mentioned.
A ministry assertion described the motion as self-defence by the Duilio, which helps shield commerce routes from drone and missile assaults by Yemen’s Houthi militia.
“The drone, with similar characteristics to those already used in previous attacks, was about 6 km (3.73 miles) from the Italian ship, flying towards it,” the assertion mentioned.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto mentioned the Houthi assaults, that are supposed to indicate solidarity with the Palestinian militant group Hamas within the conflict towards Israel, had been a part of a technique of hybrid warfare towards some nations.
“The Houthi terrorist attacks are a serious violation of international law and an attack on the security of the maritime traffic on which our economy depends,” he mentioned.
In February, the European Union launched a naval mission to the Red Sea, dubbed Eunavfor Aspides, to guard delivery within the space. Italy mentioned it could provide the admiral in command for the mission.
