Greece’s delivery minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis has resigned following an issue over his feedback concerning the demise final Tuesday of a 36-year-old man who had fallen into the ocean after being pushed again by crew members of a ship he was attempting to board.
Varvitsiotis introduced his resignation on social media platform X, previously often called Twitter, on Monday.
Video footage launched on social media after the incident confirmed crew members showing to argue with the person on the strict ramp simply because the ferry was leaving the port of Piraeus for the island of Crete.
Varvitsiotis mentioned final week that the person, who had purchased a ticket, had boarded the ship earlier than disembarking for unknown causes after which tried to board once more, which was when he was pushed again and fell into the ocean simply because the ship departed.
The man’s demise sparked outrage and protests in Greece and Varvitsiotis confronted a backlash for showing to sympathize with the crew members on Greek tv. Varvitsiotis, who later apologized, mentioned his feedback had been misinterpreted.
“I have become the target of an attack that is becoming more and more toxic,” he posted as he introduced his resignation.
“In no way did I equate the victim with the perpetrators. In no way did I wash away the responsibilities that the ship-owning company has, which it still refuses to assume.”
