Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a part of know-how group Wärtsilä, will ship the gasoline provide system for Exmar’s two new medium measurement fuel carriers that may function with ammonia gasoline.
The ships are being constructed on the Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD) in Korea for ship proprietor Danish shipowner Exmar LPG, a three way partnership between Exmar, a multi-disciplinary maritime and offshore options supplier, and Seapeak, one of many largest impartial owner-operators of liquefied pure fuel vessels.
These Exmar medium measurement fuel carriers newbuildings would be the first ever oceangoing vessels to be propelled by dual-fuel engines able to working with ammonia, these engines shall be supplied by WINGD.
The vessels are a part of a four-ship sequence for which Wärtsilä has already been contracted to provide the cargo dealing with and gasoline provide programs.
All 4 vessels had been initially ordered to function on liquefied petroleum fuel (LPG) as gasoline. However, in October Exmar declared an choice to vary the gasoline system and positioned an order with Wärtsilä to transform the gasoline programs on two vessels to have the ability to function with ammonia.
This order was booked by Wärtsilä within the first quarter of 2024.
The full scope of Wärtsilä’s provide consists of the liquid ammonia gasoline provide system together with course of engineering and dynamic simulation. The system is skid mounted with low- and high-pressure gasoline pumps, controls for gasoline stress and temperature, and warmth exchangers.
Delivery to the yard is scheduled for 2025, in response to Wärtsilä.
“There is of course a challenge to be considered when making a first-ever operational decision such as this, requiring the latest technology. Wärtsilä has the experience and technical competence to minimise this risk, which is why they were selected as a key partner in this groundbreaking project,” stated Carl-Antoine Saverys Chief Executive Officer, EXMAR.
“When operating with ammonia fuel the CO2 emissions will be reduced with about 90%. This is fully in line with Wärtsilä’s strategy for enabling decarbonised shipping operations, and is an endorsement of our capabilities to deliver future-proof systems capable of handling a new generation of marine fuels,” added Stein Thoresen, Head of Sales Marine, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.
