Damen Naval has contracted RENK to provide the gearbox methods for the brand new anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates.
The Dutch shipyard is constructing 4 new frigates, two every for the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Belgian navy.
The contract consists of eight gearboxes which are a part of the CODLAD (COmbined Diesel-eLectric And Diesel) propulsion system.
RENK’s Dutch subsidiary Schelde Gears will present assist in design and repair actions.
The first gearboxes are on account of arrive for set up in October 2025, whereas the primary of the ASW frigates is scheduled for supply by Damen Naval in 2028.
Damen Naval and RENK have developed a propulsion system resolution that meets the necessities of an anti-submarine warfare frigate, specializing in quiet propulsion and excessive resilience to exterior impacts.
“The ASW frigates will be unrivalled in both design and capabilities, and we can’t wait to see them take shape in the coming years. We are steadily finding our suppliers and partners for this project, and we are particularly pleased that with Schelde Gears, this contract has a connection so close to home to us,” stated Project Director Joop Noordijk of Damen Naval.
Damen Naval already makes use of RENK’s customised propulsion options for the German F126 multi-purpose fight frigates for the German Navy and the globally profitable Sigma-class frigates. This contract provides the ASW frigates to the checklist.
“This propulsion system sets a milestone in the naval segment, and this order fits seamlessly into the close co-operation between our two companies. Proven components from propulsion systems such as the German F125 and F126 frigates, the Italian FREMM or the Korean FFX-III class make the gearboxes the robust, easy-to-maintain and reliable centrepiece of the propulsion system,” stated Nils Oesterlen, Head of Marine at RENK.
