Baltic Dry Index Continues to Fall Across the Board
Dec 10 (Reuters) – The Baltic Exchange’s fundamental sea freight index monitoring charges for ships carrying dry bulk commodities fell on Thursday reflecting low vessel demand throughout all sizes.
The general index, which gauges the price of delivery cargoes together with iron ore, cement, grain, coal and fertiliser, slipped 12 factors, or 2.2 p.c, to 534 factors.
The Baltic index is seen by buyers as an indicator of worldwide industrial exercise.
The capesize index fell 33 factors, or 3.85 p.c, to 824 factors as common day by day earnings for capesize vessels fell $305 to $7,181. Capesizes sometimes transport 150,000-tonne cargoes equivalent to iron ore and coal.
The panamax index, for ships that normally carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, dropped 4 factors, or 0.97 p.c, to 408 factors. Average day by day earnings for panamaxes fell $37 to $3,258.
Among smaller vessels, the handysize index dropped one level to 285 factors, and the supramax index fell 5 factors to 455 factors. (Reporting by Harshith Aranya in Bengaluru, modifying by David Evans)
