Chinese shipbuilder COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) Co. is to equip 10 COSCO Shipping Corporation containerships with ABB everlasting magnet shaft generator methods. Due for supply by the tip of 2025, the order contains methods for six 14,000 TEU vessels and 4 16,000TEU vessels.

With IMO’s Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) necessities coming into power in January 2023, COSCO Shipping’s choice of ABB everlasting magnet shaft generator methods is the newest in a sequence of serious endorsements for the know-how. The contract follows a run of orders from roll-on, roll-off, bulk provider and containership house owners specifying the excessive effectivity system, whose everlasting magnet know-how takes the advantages supplied by shaft turbines to a brand new stage.

ABB says that shaft turbines with everlasting magnet know-how supply a 3-4% increased effectivity, lowered upkeep prices and an as much as 20% smaller footprint than conventional, synchronous excitation-based shaft generator methods. In mixture with ABB’s superior ACS 880 drive, which ensures most performance and suppleness in hybridization functions, the know-how can improve gasoline effectivity by an extra one p.c.

Compared with auxiliary diesel generator units, says ABB, everlasting magnet shaft turbines ship as much as 17% higher gasoline effectivity throughout voyages.

“ABB has been supporting China’s maritime industry for almost two decades, and we are proud to collaborate with COSCO Shipping, the country’s largest shipping company, in this breakthrough project,” mentioned Michael Christensen, world phase supervisor dry cargo, ABB Marine & Ports. “As we continue to develop our local capabilities to better serve our customers and help them achieve their sustainability targets, our permanent magnet technology will have an important role to play.”
