CTV Hydrocat 48 is first vessel powered by MAN hydrogen twin gas V12 engines

MAN Engines experiences that it has put its first two twin gas hydrogen-powered engines for work boats into serial operation. The two twelve-cylinder MAN D2862 LE448, diesel engine every have an output of 749 kW (1,019 hp) at 2,100 rpm.

The low-emission engines can be used on the earth’s first hydrogen-powered crew switch vessel (CTV), the Hydrocat 48 operated by Windcat Workboats, which is owned by Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB), lengthy an advocate of hydrogen as a marine gas.

The engines are IMO Tier III-certified and outfitted with a selective catalytic discount exhaust gasoline aftertreatment system. Both V12 engines have been ready for twin gas operation by MAN Engines, and supplemented with a hydrogen injection system by growth accomplice CMB Tech.

“What’s special about our technology is that we use a conventional diesel engine, which doesn’t need to be optimized for hydrogen,” says Werner Kübler, head of growth at MAN Engines, which is a part of MAN Truck and Bus SE. “A confirmed V12 marine engine is thus used wherein hydrogen is launched into the cost air by way of an adapter and is added to the combustion cycle. The combustion course of is thereby began based on the diesel precept, which requires the injection of approx. 5% of diesel gas. The diesel gas widespread rail injection parameters have been optimized right here for twin gas operation.

“MAN Engines has long-standing experience in the development of fuel-saving and reliable diesel engines, including for work boats,” provides Kübler. “Building on this experience, we were also able to achieve the best consumption values in dual fuel operation, and ensure the same operating behavior as displayed by diesel operation at full load. At the same time, we also reduce CO2 emissions through the use of hydrogen by an average of approx. 50%, and even up to 80% as a peak value.”

An additional benefit of utilizing the standard however refined diesel engine is the familiarity and ease of upkeep and repair, says MAN Engines. Additionally, pure diesel operation can proceed with out interruption if the hydrogen provide is exhausted.

In addition to the hydrogen twin gas engines MAN Engines’ options contributing to CO2 discount includ the “MAN Smart HYBRID Experience” hybrid system. or engines for gasoline/electrical drives, to contribute to CO2 discount and sustainable delivery.

“By starting with dual fuel combustion engines, we can make hydrogen technology operational in the industry and kick-start further development of the technology, regulation, supply chain, etc.,” says Willem van der Wel, managing director of Windcat Workboats.
