Matson Navigation Inc. and MAN Energy Solutions have signed a contract for the retrofit of the primary engine aboard the Daniel Ok. Inouye.

Delivered by Philly Shipyard in 2018, the three,600 TEU Daniel Ok. Inouye and its sistership Kaimana Hila are the biggest containerships constructed within the U.S. and had been designed with later conversion to LNG twin gas operation in thoughts.

Under the just-signed contract, MAN Energy Solutions’ after-sales division, MAN PrimeServ, will retrofit the vessel’s MAN B&W 7S90ME-C engine to an MAN B&W 7S90ME-GI sort able to working on LNG and gas oil. The contract consists of an choice for a second vessel.

MAN Energy Solutions says that operation on LNG is projected to scale back the Daniel Ok Inouye’s CO2 emissions by 24% with a most, assured, ultra-low methane slip of between 0.20-0.28 g/kWh throughout the load envelope.

As a part of the engine retrofit answer, MAN Energy Solutions may even present a pump and vaporizer unit (PVU), the popular high-pressure pump and vaporizer for MAN B&W ME-GI engines, which might be built-in into the ship’s gas gasoline provide system (FGSS). The PVU pressurizes LNG to 300 bar and vaporizes the liquefied gas to gaseous type for provide to the primary engine. Its management system relies on that of the MAN B&W ME-GI engine and thus presents seamless integration and excessive efficiency in gas-mode.

After the engine rerofit, the Daniel Ok. Inouye is anticipated to proceed to function on trans-Pacific routes between the US West Coast and Asia from mid-2023.
